A Guide to NYC Second-Hand Bookstores

The Joy of Discovering the Past Life of a Used Book

As convenient as online shopping is and as satisfying as a crisp new book can feel, there’s something so nostalgic about wandering through a second-hand bookstore and uncovering a gem with worn pages and a little history in its wrinkles and tears. There's also a comfort in knowing you’ve chosen something sustainable and unique, something not everyone has on their shelf or tablescape.

Not only are second-hand books often treasures you'll cherish for years, but the hunt to find them can be just as enjoyable. Every time you glance at your coffee table book, you'll be reminded of that fun afternoon shopping with a good friend or of the solo mission that turned into an unexpectedly great day. Plus, used books often come with a pretty decent price tag compared to a new one.

A Curated List of My Personal Favorite Second-Hand Bookstores in NYC:

#1: Westsider Rare & Used Books Inc.

I currently live on the Upper West Side, so this spot is especially fun to pop into now and then to see what new old books have arrived. The last time I visited, I debated between four different titles and finally narrowed it down to one (the kind of book I knew I’d regret leaving behind because it felt so unique, personal, and beautiful.) I even made a Reel AND a TikTok in its honor :) Bonus: The copy I purchased was significantly more affordable than any version I found online.

#2: Sweet Pickle Books

I lived in the Lower East Side for two years, so this spot is a very close second on my list. Not only do they have great second-hand finds, but they also have a unique business model: trade in your old books for a jar of pickles. It’s a quirky (and genius) way to encourage people to donate their unused books for a delicious incentive. The shop also has an impressive selection across a wide range of genres and categories. Who doesn’t love books and pickles?

#3: Housing Works Thrift Shops

I’m pretty sure I stop into the Housing Works on the Upper West Side at least once a week. The constant turnover always makes it worth a quick peek! They’re scattered all throughout the city, including a location on Crosby Street that’s dedicated solely to books. If you’re in NYC, it’s definitely worth checking to see if there’s a location near you. You can also feel especially good about your second-hand purchase because Housing Works is a nonprofit committed to providing access to housing, healthcare, HIV services, and gender-affirming care.

#4: Mast Books

Located in the East Village, I passed by this shop a few too many times before finally going in—mostly because it looked way too cool of a store for me. Unlike the other spots, this secondhand bookstore feels more curated and design-forward. If finding unique books matters more to you than scoring a deal, this is your place. Their selection of rare books is incredible but can be $$$. They also have an online store, perfect for days when you'd rather browse from home than put together an outfit worthy of the effortlessly cool, artsy bookstore aesthetic.

Grace House Rule: My top tip for visiting these shops? Try to go on a weekday or during off-hours. Most of them are small and get crowded easily, and you’ll want time and space to enjoy the book hunt without feeling rushed.

Because I’ve lived in the East Village, LES, and UWS, my list definitely skews toward those neighborhoods. If there’s a bookstore I missed, which I’m sure there is, since this city is full of hidden gems, please let me know! I’d love to hear your favorites. Stay tuned, I’m also working on a roundup of my favorite home stores in NYC (the ones I simply can’t walk past without going in).

And for those who don’t have the time or energy to treasure hunt through second-hand bookstores (I get it), I’ve put together a curated selection of coffee table books from Amazon, available below and in The Shop.
